Chemical Properties

Cobalt(II,III) oxide (Co₃O₄) is a stable black solid that does not form water compounds upon exposure to air but can absorb moisture. It is soluble in nitric acid and decomposes into sub-cobalt oxide above 1200 °C. In a hydrogen flame at 900 °C, it converts to metallic cobalt. Structurally, it can be represented as CoO·Co₂O₃. CoO converts to Co₃O₄ at 600–700 °C in air, and above 900 °C, CoO remains stable.

Applications

  • Catalysts & Catalyst Carriers – Effective in organic synthesis, oxidation reactions, and heterogeneous catalysis.

  • Electrochemical Applications – Active material for lithium-ion battery electrodes, supercapacitors, and electrochromic devices.

  • Ceramics & Glass – Used as a colorant for glass, porcelain, enamels, and specialized pigments.

  • Magnetic & Electronic Uses – Suitable for magnetic materials, semiconductors, temperature and gas sensors, and electronic ceramics.

  • Abrasives & Coatings – Utilized in grinding wheels, filter materials, and solar energy absorber coatings.
