Description

Expandable Graphite – Purity: 99–99.5%, Size: 50 mesh

Expandable Graphite (also called exfoliated graphite) is a specially treated form of natural graphite, designed to expand dramatically when exposed to high temperatures. Produced through the intercalation of acids (commonly sulfuric acid) between the graphite layers, it transforms into worm-like, porous expanded flakes upon heating.

With its unique layered crystal structure, thermal stability, flame-retardant properties, and high surface area, expandable graphite is widely used across multiple industries, including fire safety, metallurgy, coatings, chemicals, and energy storage.

Technical Properties

  • Purity: 99–99.5%

  • Particle Size: 50 mesh

  • Form: Flake Powder

  • Expansion Ratio: High expansion upon heating (up to several hundred times its original volume)

  • Appearance: Black, shiny flakes

Applications

Flame Retardants & Fire Protection

  • Key ingredient in intumescent flame-retardant systems.

  • Expands rapidly under heat to form a protective insulating layer that prevents fire spread.

  • Applied in plastics, foams, textiles, and building materials.

Graphite Foil & Seals

  • Expanded graphite flakes are compressed into graphite foils, sheets, and gaskets.

  • Provides thermal conductivity, flexibility, and chemical resistance, ideal for sealing in harsh environments.

Metallurgy

  • Used in foundries and casting to cover molten metals and molds.

  • Acts as an oxidation barrier and thermal insulator, reducing energy losses.

Chemical Processing & Coatings

  • Incorporated into paints, varnishes, and coatings for anti-corrosion, thermal stability, and flame resistance.

  • Improves the performance of lubricants and conductive coatings.

Energy & Environmental Uses

  • Investigated for applications in supercapacitors, batteries, and adsorbents due to its high surface area.

  • Can assist in pollutant absorption and environmental remediation.
