Description

Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) Nanopowder / Nanoparticles (99.5%, 8 nm, White)

Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) Nanopowder is a high-surface-area, white nanomaterial with an average particle size of 8 nm and a purity of 99.5%. Synthesized for high-performance flame retardancy and industrial wastewater treatment, this material offers a surface area greater than 95 m²/g and exhibits excellent thermal decomposition behavior, making it suitable for fire suppression and alkali neutralization applications.

It features a low bulk density of 0.2 g/cm³ and a true density of 2.4 g/cm³. During thermal exposure, the material decomposes endothermically at approximately 332 °C, producing magnesium oxide and water. This unique behavior provides both heat absorption and gas-phase dilution, acting as an effective flame retardant.

Applications

  1. Fire Retardant & Smoke Suppressant:
Magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles act as flame retardants in plastics, roofing, and coatings. Upon heating, they release water vapor and absorb heat through endothermic decomposition (Mg(OH)₂ → MgO + H₂O), delaying ignition and suppressing flammable gas concentrations.

  2. Acid Neutralization in Industry:
Used as a non-hazardous alkali for neutralizing acidic wastewater streams in various industrial processes.

  3. Electronics & Insulation:
Serves as a thermal stabilizer and insulating filler in ceramic, polymer, and electrical applications.

  4. Biorock Construction:
Participates in the biorock process for building artificial coral reefs by creating a high-pH environment favorable for mineral deposition.

  5. Folk & Alternative Uses:
Occasionally used in traditional remedies for its alkaline buffering properties (Note: non-medical grade use should be approached with caution).
